_______ MD, FACEP, FAAEM, ????

Have you ever wondered what the FACEP and FAAEM meant after many EM physicians' names?

FACEP = "Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians"
FAAEM = "Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine"

The College (ACEP) and Academy (AAEM) are two of the major emergency medicine professional organizations. Although you may think they are the same, there are some differences in their ideas for emergency medicine (I'm still learning about the differences so I'm not much help yet). It seems that physicians can join either or both organizations. The fellow part means that they have met certain professional, ethical, and educational requirements for that status, specifically EM board certified.

You can check them out and learn about student membership information below. AAEM-RSA offers a FREE one-year trial membership from medical students, too. Membership comes with journal subscriptions, residency books, and spam mail. I've been a member of both organizations for a year now and found that the journals and magazines are really interesting and the residency books are very useful, especially EMRA Survival Guide.

AAEM - Resident and Student Association (AAEM-RSA)

ACEP - Residents and Medical Students
(EMRA)

*At Noel's request, check out EMRA's Facebook group, too! Here's a link to Noel's early post about this.

Stayin' Alive & Savin' Lives

WebMD - CPR Gives "Stayin' Alive" New Life

I read about this a few days ago and meant to pass it along. In short, the Bee Gees' disco hit "Stayin' Alive" has a beat of 103 beats/min which researchers hope will help people remember to do chest compressions at the correct rate (100 beats/min). Pretty cool!

In case any of you can't remember this classic, here's a link to their radical video:

Welcome to the UW Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG)

Thanks to all those who stopped by the EMIG table at the interest group fair this morning! It was a huge success! We're excited to see all the people interested in EM. For those of you wondering about "official" membership in EMIG, if you signed up for the mailing list, consider yourself an "official" member. Feel free to e-mail the EMIG leadership (uwemig@u.washington.edu) if you have any questions about EM or if you have any suggestions on activities, blog posts, etc.

UCI Emergency Medicine Student Symposium - February 7, 2009

Below is information on an upcoming EM conference in California in case anybody is interested.

===============

The UCI Emergency Medicine Student Symposium is coming up on February 7th, 2009. This years focus is Subspecialties in Emergency Medicine.

This symposium will be held in Orange, CA and will be an exciting day consisting of lectures about emergency medicine in general as well as some of the subspecialty opportunities, followed by hands-on workshops about a variety of the EM subspecialties. There will also be an opportunity to present research in the mini-oral session.

Why should I go?
The UCI Emergency Medicine Student Run Symposium will help you learn more about the field and allow you to network with EM physicians. This year's topic is subspecialties which will provide a lot of new ideas of things you can do as an emergency medicine physician (including some things you may have never thought of). Also, for students from other schools or out of state, if you are interested in possibly doing a rotation at UCI, or applying to residency here, one of the workshops is a tour of our brand new hospital (opening in Nov 2008) and you can get a great feel for the environment at UCI Medical Center.

Where is the symposium?
At the Doubletree Hotel in Orange. Very safe location, only 15 minutes from the airport (John Wayne Airport, Orange County) and we will have a block of rooms reserved for out-of-towners. Registration forms and rates will be coming soon. http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/dt/hotel/SNACCDT-Doubletree-Hotel-Anaheim-Orange-County-California/index.do

Will there be an opportunity to present research?
Yes! We will have mini-oral presentations for research. Applications will be sent out later this month for submission. Last year over 100 people attended the UCI Emergency Medicine Student Run Symposium and we hope to grow a lot this year. It's a excellent chance to present your research.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact us. You can either email the UCI Emergency Medicine Interest Group at uciemig@gmail.com or you can contact our Outreach VP, Shannon Toohey at stoohey@uci.edu.
